Pilates vs. entrenamiento de fuerza: entender qué necesita tu cuerpo

Maybe you were told after an X-ray.  Maybe you’ve noticed that one shoulder sits higher than the other.  Or maybe you just feel like your back is never fully comfortable.

Scoliosis is more common than we think. And many people live with it for years without fully understanding what’s happening in their body—or how to move without fear.

Before talking about solutions, there’s something important to understand: not all spinal deviations are the same.

And knowing the difference can completely change the way you move.

Scoliosis vs. Postural Scoliosis (in simple terms)

According to the Cleveland Clinic, scoliosis is a structural curvature of the spine. It doesn’t just bend to the side—it also rotates.

Sometimes you can see a small bump on the back when bending forward. Other times it’s barely visible, but the body is constantly compensating for it.

Postural scoliosis, on the other hand, isn’t a fixed curve. It’s the body’s response to something else, such as:

  • One leg being slightly shorter than the other

  • A pelvic imbalance

  • Repeated habits, like always carrying a bag on the same side

In these cases, when the underlying cause is addressed, the spine can often reorganize itself more effectively.

That’s why, before trying to “fix” anything, the first step is listening to what your body is trying to do.

So… how can scoliosis be supported?

It’s not about forcing the spine to look straight.

It’s about helping it feel supported.

Support often includes physical therapy, postural work, and low-impact practices. And this is where Pilates can become a powerful ally—when it’s practiced with attention and proper guidance.

Why Pilates can help if you have scoliosis

Not because it’s gentle.  But because it’s intelligent.

Pilates works through alignment, control, and body awareness. And for a spine that’s constantly compensating, that makes all the difference.

With well-guided practice, Pilates can help you:

  • Strengthen the muscles that support the spine

  • Balance both sides of the body

  • Improve posture without creating rigidity

  • Move with more control and less impact

Scoliosis doesn’t “disappear,” but pain can lessen, mobility can improve, and that constant sense of bodily imbalance can begin to settle.

What kind of exercises are usually helpful?

When scoliosis or postural scoliosis is present, it’s often important to work on:

  • Deep back muscles

  • Arms

  • Core stability

Always progressively. Always adapted. Not every exercise is right for every body—and that’s okay. A skilled instructor knows when to lengthen, when to stabilize, and when to simply support the movement.

So… is Pilates compatible with scoliosis?

Yes. And in many cases, it’s one of the most respectful ways to rebuild trust in your back.

That said, it needs to be authentic Pilates—guided, adapted to you. Not generic routines. Not copying movements without understanding them.

Joseph Pilates said it best:

“In 10 sessions you’ll feel the difference, in 20 you’ll see the difference, and in 30 you’ll have a whole new body.”
