Does Pilates also build strength?

A kind of strength that doesn't always look the same
For a long time, Pilates was seen as just a way to stretch the body — something gentle, calm, and almost a complement to other workouts. But it only takes a few classes to discover there's a lot more work happening beneath the surface than it seems. Because yes, Pilates also builds strength, it just does it in a different way. (If you want to go deeper on this comparison, we have a full guide on Pilates vs. Strength Training.)
When we think about gaining strength, we usually picture weights, barbells, or intense workouts. However, strength also has to do with something much more everyday: how you hold yourself up, how you walk, how you climb stairs, how you carry a bag, or how your body responds when it needs balance. That's exactly the kind of strength Pilates works on — a deep, functional strength connected to daily life.

Pilates does work with resistance
Your own body weight can already be a form of resistance. On top of that, on equipment like the Reformer, the springs create a progressive load that constantly challenges the muscles. That's why, even though a class might look fluid from the outside, the body is working with a lot of precision on the inside.
The difference is that Pilates isn't only about moving more weight — it's about moving better. Through control, alignment, and breathing, the body learns to activate deep muscles that often stay dormant, but that are essential for supporting the spine, stabilizing the joints, and making everything work more efficiently.

A strength that follows you outside the studio
What's interesting about Pilates is that the strength doesn't stay only in class. With practice, you start noticing better posture, more stability, less tension in the back, and more control in everyday movements. It's not just about building muscle — it's about building a body that feels more capable, more balanced, and better prepared to support you day to day.
