5 Signs You’re Truly Progressing in Pilates

There’s something I want to tell you—something I see all the time in class: many people are progressing… they just don’t always recognize it.
In Pilates, progress doesn’t always show up as a big achievement. Sometimes it arrives quietly, in small moments that can easily go unnoticed if you don’t pause to listen.
A breath that suddenly feels different. An exercise that no longer intimidates you. A movement that, out of nowhere, makes more sense in your body.
From the outside, it might not look like much. But on the inside, something is finding its place.
If you’ve ever wondered, “Am I actually making progress?”
Let me share a few signs that usually appear when you’re on the right path.

1. You stop moving just because you’re told to
At the beginning, this is completely normal.
You move because the instructor says so. You copy. You follow. You trust.
Then one day, something shifts.
You’re doing an exercise and, without overthinking it, you know what you’re looking for. You feel which muscles are working.
You notice how the breath supports the movement.
You understand why that exercise exists.
At that point, you’re no longer moving by imitation.
You’re moving with intention.
And trust me—that moment changes everything in your practice.

2. You listen to your body more than you watch yourself
At some point, you stop caring whether the exercise looks “pretty.”
Your attention moves elsewhere.
Is your center stable?
Is your breath flowing?
How does the movement feel—not how many repetitions you’re doing?
When that happens, the practice becomes more honest.
More personal.
More yours.

3. The shaking no longer scares you
Maybe before, when your body started shaking, you thought:
“I must be weak.”
Now you understand it differently.
You know that shaking appears when you’re working from the deep muscles—the ones that truly support you.
It’s not weakness.
It’s a clear sign that you’re exactly where you need to be.

4. The exercises start to make sense
Suddenly, the names don’t sound strange anymore.
You recognize them. You anticipate them. You know what they’re there to work on.
Class stops feeling like something that’s being done to you.
It starts to feel like something you’re building with your body.
You’re no longer just following instructions.
You’re actively participating.

5. You leave class more present than when you arrived
And there’s one sign I find especially beautiful:
you leave class with a clearer mind.
The noise quiets down.
Your body feels more inhabited.
Your attention finds a place to land.
That, too, is progress.
Not just physical—but mental, emotional, embodied.

If you see yourself in this…
You are progressing.
Maybe not in the loud, obvious way we sometimes expect—but in a much deeper one.
Your body is changing, yes.
But even more importantly, the way you listen to yourself and live in your body is changing.
A space to keep going deeper
At Mindbody, we don’t believe in moving faster. We believe in moving with awareness.
In listening more.
In finding clarity.
In replacing pressure with presence.
If this path resonates with you, I’d love to accompany you.
