Breathe better to move better: the diaphragm's role in your posture

We breathe thousands of times a day without thinking about it.
And that's exactly why we tend to forget that breathing isn't just about getting air into the lungs. It also influences how we move, how we hold ourselves up, and even how we feel.
When we talk about posture, many people think of shoulders back, a straight back, or an activated abdomen. But we rarely think about a muscle that works quietly at the body's center and plays a part in all of that: the diaphragm.
You may have never consciously seen or felt it. Yet it's working with you every time you breathe, walk, sit, or try to keep your balance.
Much more than a breathing muscle
The diaphragm is the main muscle of breathing. It's dome-shaped and sits just below the lungs, separating the thoracic cavity from the abdominal one.
But its job goes far beyond helping you inhale and exhale.
Because of its location and its many connections to the spine, the ribs, the pelvis, the abdominal muscles, and numerous internal structures, the diaphragm actively participates in the body's stability.
You could say it works as a great bridge between breathing and movement.
When the diaphragm works efficiently, the body tends to feel more balanced, more stable, and less tense. When it doesn't, compensations start to appear that often end up showing up as discomfort, stiffness, or pain.

Posture starts long before the shoulders
Sometimes we think improving posture is just a matter of "standing up straight."
But posture isn't something imposed from the outside. It's an internal organization.
The diaphragm has a direct influence on the spine's natural curves, the position of the pelvis, and the way we distribute body weight. Every breath creates pressure changes inside the abdomen and chest, and those changes help stabilize the spine during movement.
That's why limited, shallow, or constantly tense breathing can gradually alter the way the body organizes itself.
And when the body loses that organization, other areas start working overtime: neck, shoulders, lower back, hips, and even knees.
When breathing poorly can also cause pain
It might seem surprising, but research has found an important relationship between the respiratory muscles and lower back pain.
Various studies have observed that when the diaphragm becomes fatigued or doesn't function properly, the body changes its stability and postural control strategies. In other words, other structures try to compensate for the work the respiratory system should be doing.
Over time, those compensations can turn into excessive tension, loss of stability, and recurring discomfort.
That's why, when we talk about back pain, it's not always just about strengthening muscles. Sometimes we also need to learn to breathe more efficiently.

The diaphragm also influences how you feel
There's something else that makes the diaphragm so interesting: its relationship with the nervous system.
The way we breathe directly influences our levels of stress, anxiety, and emotional activation. When breathing becomes fast and shallow, the body interprets that it needs to stay alert.
On the other hand, when we breathe more broadly and consciously, it activates a response associated with calm and recovery.
That's why many people feel that after a Pilates session, they don't just move better. They also feel calmer.
It's not a coincidence.
The body and mind are far more connected than we tend to imagine.
What does Pilates have to do with all of this?
A lot.
Pilates uses breathing as a tool for movement and body awareness. It's not simply about inhaling and exhaling, but about learning to coordinate breath with stability, control, and mobility. As practice progresses, the diaphragm starts working more efficiently alongside other important muscles like the transverse abdominis, the pelvic floor, and the deep muscles of the back.
That collaboration helps improve posture, reduce unnecessary tension, and create a sense of greater internal support.
In addition, gentle movements involving thoracic mobility, spinal elongation, and conscious core work allow breathing to regain space and freedom.
And when breathing regains space, the body usually does too.

Breathing is also a way of taking care of yourself
Sometimes we think improving our posture requires more effort.
But often the first step is actually the opposite: learning to let go.
Letting go of tension in the neck. Letting go of stiffness in the ribs. Letting go of a breath that's been small for far too long.
The diaphragm reminds us that the body works as an integrated system. That breathing, moving, and holding ourselves up are processes that work together.
And that when one improves, the others tend to follow.
