Having a lumbar disc herniation does not mean you must stop moving

Receiving a diagnosis of a lumbar disc herniation often brings fear. Fear of movement, fear of making things worse, fear of doing something wrong. Many people are told the same thing: better not move.

But staying still is not always the answer.

In Pilates, the focus is not on doing random exercises. It is about learning how to move with more control and support from the center of the body. When movement is organized this way, the spine does not carry all the load and unnecessary compensation decreases.

From the perspective of the method developed by Joseph Pilates, conscious movement is a form of care. Strengthening the center, improving coordination and respecting posture help the body distribute forces more efficiently during each session.

Moving with care does not mean staying still. It means learning to move better. With more awareness, more control and less fear. Often, discomfort comes not from movement itself, but from not knowing how to move safely.

When movement is guided and progressive, it can help the spine feel more supported and the body more confident. The goal is not to force, but to accompany the body through its process.

A lumbar disc herniation does not define everything you can or cannot do. It highlights the need for informed, supported movement.

In Mindbody, we understand movement as a long term care tool. We adapt each session so your body can strengthen in a safe, conscious and sustainable way.
